Scott “Bugs” Allen

Jazz. Funk. Soul.

When you’re the 3rd generation of a family musical legacy, certain expectations exist. Those expectations are seldom met, let alone exceeded.

But the grandson of a Cuban born balladeer, and his 5 octave soprano wife would become a multi-instrumentalist, band leader, and eventually an award-winning musical director.

Born and raised in Baltimore, Maryland, Allen trained in music and the theatre arts at Arena Players, Inc. under the advisement of his mother (also a classically trained and locally renowned soprano and pianist).

It was this training that would prepare “Bugs” for his eventual association with television producer and award-winning playwright Michael Ajakwe with whom he would serve as musical director for two of Ajakwe’s hit stage plays. “You’re All I Need to Get By” (Allen’s debut as a musical director), and “If You Don’t Believe…” for which Scott won 2005’s N.A.A.C.P. Theatre Award for Best Musical Director, the sole trophy of the show’s eight nominations.

Most notably “Bugs” is known as the founder of Spectra Jazz recording artists 3rd Scenario since its formation in 1998.
